Progression of criminal justice related jobs:
My initial experience to a semi law enforcement field was working several security related jobs while attending college. My first was at Kaufmann’s in the Boulevard Mall, Amherst, NY. Daily encounters with Amherst Police increased my knowledge of the New York State Penal law, which ultimately encouraged me to further explore the criminal justice field.

At the same time, I was working for the Quartermaster at the University of Buffalo Police Department. Here, although assigned to Quartermaster duties, I was able to observe the daily lives of police officers and what it was like working in a real police setting.

I also took a seasonal position in 2004 with New York State Park Police where I was employed as a Public Safety Ranger. It was a three month temporary summer seasonal position; we were ultimately the front line defense in Niagara Falls State Park assisting the officers in their busiest time of year.

From 2002-2004, I attended Erie Community College and obtained my associates of applied science degree in criminal justice. I absolutely knew that I wanted to become a police officer and now it was just a matter of when and where I could get hired the fastest.

From 2004-2005 I applied to several police departments both here in New York State and several in the Maryland and Virginia area, but was unsuccessful. I then made the decision to continue my education and attended Buffalo State from 2005-2007. I looked forward to attending classes every day and couldn’t get enough of it. Over time I became so interested that I joined the Criminal Justice Club and held the office of vice president a short time later. Additionally, after the reinstatement of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, Alpha Phi Sigma, I was elected public relations officer for the Buffalo State Chapter. Upon graduation from Buffalo State in 2007, I became the president of the Criminal Justice Alumni Association.

During the time that I was at Buffalo State, I continued on with my employment in the security field working in loss prevention at Wal-Mart and also working as a security officer for Kaleida Health.

Alpha Phi Sigma provided a lot of information on seeking government jobs and therefore I put my best effort forth during the pre-employment process with several government agencies. In 2008 I was hired with United States Border Patrol and couldn’t have been happier.
